本校はアメリカのピッツバーグ市にあるUpper St. Clair High Schoolと姉妹校になりました。来年にはUpper St. Clair High Schoolの生徒たちも本校を訪問してくれる予定です。
今後も、さいたま市と姉妹都市であるピッツバーグ市とのさらなる友好関係を積み重ねていく一助になれればと思います。
以下は、姉妹校提携の覚書を結ぶ際に話をした私の挨拶となります。
＜あいさつ＞
皆さん、こんにちは。
ピッツバーグ市に到着したのが一昨日で、時差ボケがあって、自分の名前忘れそうですので、原稿を読みながら話をすることを許してください。
まずは、アッパーセントクレア高校の校長先生、教頭先生、先生と生徒、保護者の皆さん、そして、今回アテンドしていただいているラムジー先生に対して、皆様のホスピタリティの深さとスペシャルプログラムに改めて感謝の意を表します。ありがとうございます。
さて、本日は私たちの学校にとって特別な日です。私たちの学校は２０１９年に開校した歴史がとても浅い学校です。一方、セントクレア高校は、１９５７年に開校して歴史が深い学校です。では、なぜ、この２つの学校が姉妹校を提携することになったのか？その理由を説明します。
本校があるさいたま市とピッツバーグ市は姉妹都市です。提携したのは１９９８年で、２７年前です。また、２０１８年には、さいたま市の市長やさいたま市の教育長がピッツバーグを訪問しました。一昨年、姉妹都市２５年を記念して、さいたま市長が再び、ピッツバーグ市を訪問するくらい、さいたま市はピッツバーグ市を大切にしています。そして、本校が２０１９年に開校したときには、ピッツバーグ市を代表として姉妹都市に関わるチャールズさんや、ここにいるラムジーさんの夫を本校にお呼びして、入学式に参加していただきました。
そのようなことから、我々は、生徒が海外フィールドを行う旅行先はピッツバーグしかないと考えました。そこで、ペンシルベニア州日米協会に本校と交流してくれる学校を依頼しました。アッパーセントクレア高校との最初の出会いは、３年前にデュケイン大学のフィールドワークに本校の１期生が参加したと同時に、アッパーセントクレア高校の生徒も参加し、２年間交流することができました。そのような、長い準備の時間を費やしたことと同時に、アッパーセントクレア高校の皆様の非常に寛大な気持ちと、心の広さがあって、ここに姉妹校提携をすることができました。
まさに、ピッツバーグ市で有名な建造物の一つに橋があることを知っていますか。橋は何かと何かをつなぐものになりますが、今回の提携は、両国の、両市の、両校の関係をつなぐ非常に重要な橋となり、今後の関係を深くつなげ、さらなる発展をしていくと、私たちは認識しています。
私たちの学校は、国際バカロレアのMYPとDPを導入し、アッパーセントクレア高校と同様です。そして、校訓は「Grit Growth Global」という、日本でも珍しい英語です。生徒の皆さんには、この提携を最大限に活かし、積極的に交流し、質問をし、さらなるつながりを築いてほしいと思います。Gritの精神で、失敗を恐れずに、チャレンジしてほしいと思います。異なる生活様式について洞察を得る貴重なチャンスです。
最後に、今回、緊張した挨拶をしたら時差ボケも治りそうです。ありがとうございます。共に素晴らしい思い出を作りましょう。そして、皆さんとの時間が実りを多いものとなることを願っています。ともに素晴らしい経験を積み重ね、成功を収めましょう。本当にありがとうございました。
Hello, everyone.
I arrived in Pittsburgh just the day before yesterday, and with my jet lag, I might even forget my name. So please let me speak while reading from my notes.
First, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Principal, Vice Principals, teachers, students, and parents of Upper Saint Clair high school, as well as to the organizer Ms. Ramsey, for your deep hospitality and the special program you have prepared. Thank you.
Today is a special day for our schools. MOIS opened in 2019 and has a very short history. In contrast, upper St. Clair High School opened in 1957 and has a long history. So why did these two schools decide to become sister schools? Let me explain the reason.
Saitama City and Pittsburgh are sister cities. This partnership began in 1998, 27 years ago. Furthermore, in 2018, the Mayor of Saitama City and the Superintendent of Saitama City visited Pittsburgh. Just two years ago, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the sister city relationship, the Mayor of Saitama city visited Pittsburgh again. This demonstrates how highly Saitama City values Pittsburgh. What’s more, when our school opened in 2019, we invited Mr. Charles Stout, who represents Pittsburgh in sister city relations, and Mr. Doug Ramsey, Ms. Ramsey’s husband, to attend our entrance ceremony.
Given these connections, we felt Pittsburgh was the only possible destination for our students’ overseas field trip. We asked for help from the Pennsylvania Japan-America Society to help us find a partner school. Our first encounter with Upper St. Clair High School occurred three years ago when our first graduating class participated in Duquesne University’s Sister City Summer camp program. Students from Upper St. Clair High School also participated. Since then, and with the tremendous generosity and open heartedness of everyone at Upper St. Clair High School, this sister school partnership is possible.
We know that one of Pittsburgh’s famous landmarks is the bridge. A bridge connects one thing to another, and we recognize that this partnership will serve as a vital bridge connecting the two countries, the two cities, and the two schools. we will deepen our future relationship and foster further development.
Our school, like Upper St. Clair High School, has introduced the International Baccalaureate MYP and DP programs. Our school motto is “Grit, Growth, Global” – an English phrase quite rare in Japan. I hope our students will make the most of this partnership, engage actively, ask questions, and build even stronger connections. I encourage you to embrace the spirit of Grit, challenge yourselves without fear of failure, and seize this valuable opportunity to gain insight into different ways of life.
Finally, delivering this nervous greeting seems to have cured my jet lag. Thank you. Let’s create wonderful memories together. I hope our time together will be fruitful. Let’s accumulate amazing experiences and achieve success together. Thank you very much indeed.
